Steak and a Band Past Ten

Rick's on the Square runs on a schedule most Tyler kitchens have abandoned: a full menu and a working stage well past the hour when other dining rooms have flipped their chairs. That late clock is the point. The steak comes out cooked to order and consistently so, the kind of execution that holds up whether the table sat down at seven or eleven. The fried pork chop is the other anchor, a plate servers steer newcomers toward along with side and appetizer pairings, and the record shows that steering pays off.

Even the hotdog gets named specifically, which says something about a New American menu willing to let a bar-food item share billing with the steak. This is downtown, on the square itself, in a stretch that has run through three decades of ownership changes while staying open and staying loud. The live music is not background dressing; it is load-bearing, part of why groups land here on weekend nights when the rest of Erwin Street has gone quiet. Service reads attentive even at the room's latest hours, with named servers making specific recommendations rather than reciting a list.

The one consistent friction point is the bar tab: cocktail pricing, particularly on well-liquor mixed drinks, draws real objection, and a couple of doubles can outrun the food bill by a wide margin. The kitchen itself is priced as moderate, and the steak-and-pork-chop combination reads as a place built for the group that wants a real dinner without a white-tablecloth commitment, then wants to stay for the band instead of hunting for a second stop. It is a downtown fixture built for volume and hours, not for quiet.

Order the fried pork chop and ask the server for the side pairing rather than defaulting to the steak alone, and budget the bar tab separately since mixed drinks run well above the food prices.

What earns the 5.2

01
Late kitchen, real menu

Rick's keeps serving steak and pork chops well past when most Tyler dining rooms close, which is rare on its own.

02
Service that steers well

Servers make specific, successful recommendations on sides and appetizers rather than leaving newcomers to guess.

03
Bar prices push back

Cocktail costs, especially doubles, draw genuine complaint and can outpace the food bill.

How we score

The Insider Score is our own 10-point editorial rating, set by the writer who covers the room. It is never an average of other sites’ stars, and it is never for sale. It weighs three things:

01Track record

How highly a kitchen rates, across how many diners, over how long.

02Consistency

Whether recent diners still agree with the long-term verdict.

03Distinction

What the kitchen does that its category does not.

Rick's On the Square earns a 5.2, solid on our scale for New American in Tyler.
