Tyler has one state park almost in town and two more about an hour out, and they are three different kinds of day. Tyler State Park, nine miles north, is a lake in the Pineywoods with more than 13 miles of trails, one of them laid out by the Civilian Conservation Corps more than 85 years ago. Caddo Mounds, south near Alto, is a Caddo village and ceremonial center more than 1,200 years old. Lake Tawakoni, northwest near Wills Point, is a 37,879-acre reservoir with striped bass. This is the outdoor half of the day. The eating half is at the end: one table on the way back from each park.

$6Adult entry at Tyler State Park. Lake Tawakoni charges $5. Caddo Mounds is $5 for adults, $8 for a family of three.
Oct 30Lake Tawakoni closes from noon October 30 to noon November 2 for a permitted hunt.
Tue to SunThe only days Caddo Mounds is open, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

We run State Park Near Me, a directory of every state park in the country, and we are a guest here. Tyler Insider asked for the parks. They supplied the restaurants.

The day, in order

Tyler State Park is the easy one: nine miles up Park Road 16, open daily, and close enough for an afternoon. It says it often reaches capacity, so reserve a day pass online, especially on a fall weekend; its busy season runs to Thanksgiving. Caddo Mounds and Lake Tawakoni are each about an hour away in opposite directions, so pick one per day. Children 12 and under get in free at both Texas state parks, and you do not need a fishing licence to fish from shore in a Texas state park.

Boat, fish, swim, hike, mountain bike, picnic or camp: the park does all of it around one lake in the Pineywoods. There are more than 13 miles of trails, and the Whispering Pines Nature Trail is the one to walk, laid out by the Civilian Conservation Corps more than 85 years ago. Anglers fish for crappie, perch, catfish and bass from a pier or a boat, with a 5 mph limit on the water, and the park loans rods, reels and tackle. Entry is $6 for adults and free for children 12 and under. The park store and boat rentals open Thursday through Monday, but the park warns that rentals are limited right now because the lake is low.

Caddo Mounds

More than 1,200 years ago, ancestral Caddo people built a village and ceremonial center here, about A.D. 800, on the route that became El Camino Real de los Tejas. Three earthen mounds still rise from the Piney Woods, and the Texas Historical Commission notes they are still sacred to Caddo people, so treat them that way. Exhibits and programs explain how the Caddo lived on this land. The site is open Tuesday through Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors, veterans, teachers and first responders, $2 for children 6 to 17, and $8 for a family of two adults and one child.

Lake Tawakoni

The park covers 376 acres of oak forest and more than five miles of shore on a 37,879-acre reservoir. Fish for striped and hybrid striped bass, white bass, catfish, crappie and largemouth from shore or a boat; there is a four-lane ramp, a fish cleaning station and a kid fish pond. Nearly five miles of trails run through the woods, and kayaks rent at a self-service kiosk. Day use is $5 for adults, and the park is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Check the date before you go: the park is closed to everyone but permitted hunters from noon October 30 to noon November 2.
