Tyler is the Rose Capital, and the Tyler Rose Garden on Rose Park Drive is the proof: more than 38,000 rose bushes in about 600 varieties on 14 acres, run by the city and free to walk. The roses peak twice a year, in April and October, so this is one of the two best times to go. In December the garden gets a second season, Holiday Lights in the Garden, every evening from 5 to 8 p.m. Here is how both visits work, and where to eat after.
We run Botanical Garden Near Me, a directory of public gardens and arboretums across the United States, and we are a guest here. Tyler Insider asked for the garden. They supplied the restaurants.
The plan, in order
For the roses, go in daylight this fall: the city says fall rose season begins in October, and peak bloom depends on the weather. The garden opens at sunrise and closes at sunset every day, and there is no ticket. For the lights, plan a December evening. The city’s garden page lists Holiday Lights in the Garden in December from 5 to 8 p.m. daily, but it has not posted exact 2026 dates yet, so check the Tyler Parks and Rec page before you drive over. The lights end at 8, which leaves time for dinner at any of the three tables below.
The Tyler Rose Garden

The garden is at 420 Rose Park Drive, phone (903) 531-1212. It opened in 1952, and in 2019 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Beyond the rose beds there are formal gardens with fountains, a butterfly garden and a nature trail. The Rose Garden Center inside the complex is open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. There are two parking lots: one in front of the Rose Garden Center off Rose Park Drive, and one inside the garden. The city recommends the lot inside the garden if you have trouble walking and plan to stay outdoors. One current note: the city says the garden pond is under maintenance.
