East Texas does its veterans parade in October, which catches people out every single year. The Texas Veterans’ Military Show runs from eight in the morning until four in the afternoon on Saturday, October 17, 2026, and its grand military parade comes down from Tyler to Bullard behind the Patriot Guard, with Medal of Honor recipients riding in it and a World War Two flyover overhead. That is confirmed on the organisers’ own site. Veterans Day itself is Wednesday, November 11, three and a half weeks later, and that is the day the restaurant offers run. The meals are the least settled part of any of it: every list you will find today is last year’s list. We checked.
The October parade, and why it is the one that matters here
The Texas Veterans’ Military Show has run since 2001 and is now one of the larger veterans events in the state: somewhere around eight thousand people a year and more than a hundred military units. The grand military parade is the centrepiece, and it is a road parade rather than a loop, running from Tyler down to Bullard led by the Patriot Guard, with Medal of Honor recipients, active duty units, veterans’ groups, classic cars and historic military vehicles behind them. A World War Two flyover goes over the top of it.
This year the organisers list four Medal of Honor recipients attending: Don Ballard, Ken David, Mike Fitzmaurice and Jim Livingston. There are fewer than seventy living recipients in the entire country. Four of them in Bullard on one Saturday morning is the single best reason to make the drive.
The date is Saturday, October 17, 2026, eight until four. Note that it is not Veterans Day, is not near Veterans Day, and does not move to Veterans Day. If you are looking for a parade on the eleventh you will not find this one.
The eleventh itself
Veterans Day 2026 falls on Wednesday, November 11. Smith County has in recent years proclaimed the day Veterans Appreciation Day, and the observances around Tyler have tended to be ceremonies rather than marches: the Tyler Area Chamber has run a celebration, South Tyler Rotary has held a ceremony at the W.T. Brookshire Conference Center, and the East Texas Arboretum has put on a community ceremony with music and lunch. The Watkins-Logan Texas State Veterans Home on the north side runs its own parade and cookout for residents on the day.
None of those has posted 2026 details yet, which is entirely normal in September for events of this size. We are watching and will list the confirmed times here as they go up.
Free meals: what is actually confirmed for 2026
Same problem, different subject. Search for Veterans Day free meals right now and you will find long lists with 2026 in the headline. Open the restaurants’ own pages and the offers are from 2025. Applebee’s Veterans Day page, as this was written in mid-September, still says the free entree is available on Tuesday, November 11, which was last year’s date.
So we are not going to publish a list of offers that no restaurant has agreed to. What we can tell you is the pattern, because it is remarkably stable. The chains that run a free Veterans Day meal have run it for years, most announce in the last week of October, and the terms rarely move: dine-in only, one meal per veteran, a limited menu to choose from, drinks and tip not included, and participating locations only. That last one matters more in a market this size than in a big metro: Tyler has one of most of these chains, so if it opts out there is no second branch across town to try. Applebee’s has run its offer for eighteen consecutive years. Golden Corral, Texas Roadhouse, Chili’s, Denny’s, Red Robin, Cracker Barrel, Bob Evans and Buffalo Wild Wings have all been regular participants.

What counts as proof of service
This is the question that actually causes trouble at the door, and the answer is broader than most people expect. Applebee’s published terms accept a Uniformed Services ID card, a Uniformed Services retired ID card, a current Leave and Earnings Statement, a veterans organization card such as American Legion or VFW, a DD214, a citation or commendation, and, simply, a photograph of yourself in uniform. Most chains use a similar list. If you served and you do not carry a card, a DD214 or a photo is usually enough. Call the specific location first, because the offer is franchise-level and the person answering the phone is the one who will be working the door.

The October parade starts in Tyler and finishes in Bullard, so we have picked from both ends, and everything here is open at lunchtime on a Wednesday as well for the eleventh. Ranked by Insider Score. Two notes: Burger Warehouse on Troup Highway scores 9.2, the second highest in Tyler, and shuts on Sundays. And Pit Stop Pizza in Bullard scores 8.5 but does not open until four on a weekday, so it is a parade-Saturday option only.
