Fishing Lake Tyler from the barge and the bank, and where to eat after

Fourteen miles southeast of downtown, Tyler’s drinking water sits in two lakes joined by a canal, Lake Tyler and Lake Tyler East, “2,224 acres (Tyler West) 2,276 acres (Tyler East)” by the state’s count, with largemouth and spotted bass, crappie, catfish, and sunfish in both. The access is the story. The City of Tyler Water Utility runs free ramps at Hill Creek Park and Chapman Park on the west lake and at Old Omen Road and Highway 64 on the east lake, East Side Park is free bank with picnic tables, and Fritz and Opal’s Barge is a privately run bank-fishing spot with live bait, restrooms, and ADA access that charges “$4 to fish between 6 am and 6 pm; $5 between 6 pm and 6 am.” The state adds one warning: “boating and personal watercraft activity can become very intense during summer months,” so fish early and late. This is the fishing half of a day on the city’s own water. The eating half is at the end, in Whitehouse, on the road home.

The day, in order

Be at Hill Creek Park or East Side Park at first light, before the boats, with a light rod and minnows for the crappie along the docks and timber and a second rod with punch bait on the bottom for the channel cats. Fish until the wake boats show up, then drive ten minutes into Whitehouse for lunch. The afternoon is for the state park if you have kids, 11 miles north of town, where “you do not need a fishing license to fish from shore” and the 64-acre spring-fed lake has a pier. Then come back to the barge at six, when the rate goes to $5, the boats quit, and the catfish start, with a bucket of the barge’s live bait and the lantern on. Dinner is in Whitehouse before or after, depending on the bite.

What is in the water

Catfish, channels and blues on the bottom and flatheads after dark, on the statewide rule: 25 channel and blue combined with only 10 at 20 inches or longer, and 5 flatheads at 18 inches. For the serious catfish water, Lake Palestine is 21 miles the other way, where the state says “channel and blue catfishes are abundant and flathead catfish provide great opportunity for trophy-sized fish” and tells you to drift cut bait between Hawn Point and the Highway 155 bridges. Crappie, 25 a day at 10 inches, around the docks and timber in spring. Largemouth and spotted bass, 5 combined with a 14-inch minimum on largemouth. Sunfish with no limit. One local rule on Lake Tyler: a city ordinance prohibits bowfishing.

Where to fish from shore

• Fritz and Opal’s Barge, Lake Tyler, 14 miles: $4 by day, $5 overnight, live bait, restrooms, ADA access.
• East Side Park, Lake Tyler East, 15 miles: free bank, parking, picnic tables, camping.
• Hill Creek Park and Chapman Park, Lake Tyler: the free city ramps with bank around them and restrooms.
• Tyler State Park, 11 miles: $6 an adult, under 12 free, one pier, no licence from shore, 5 mph on the lake.
• Lake Palestine at the Highway 155 bridges, 24 miles: the catfish and crappie water the state names, with marinas selling live bait.
• Lake Jacksonville, Peninsula Point and Southshore Park, 31 miles: free city parks on a 1,320-acre lake where bass “have exceeded 15 pounds.”

Licences and the limits

Texas Parks and Wildlife sells the resident freshwater package for $30, the senior package for $12, the nonresident package for $58, and a one-day all-water licence for $11 resident or $16 nonresident, all valid to August 31. Under 17 fishes free, so does anyone born before 1931, and “you do not need a fishing license to fish from shore in a state park.” The statewide limits for September 1, 2026 through August 31, 2027: black bass 5 combined at 14 inches for largemouth, white bass 25 at 10, hybrid stripers 5 at 18, crappie 25 at 10, channel and blue catfish 25 combined with only 10 at 20 inches or more, flathead 5 at 18, sunfish unlimited. Lake Fork, 45 miles north, runs its own 16-to-24-inch bass slot, and Jacksonville allows only two largemouth under 18 inches a day with no minimum, Athens runs a 14-to-21-inch slot with one fish 21 or longer, and Palestine’s exception is on catfish: only five blue or channel cats 20 inches or longer in the 25, and one of those 30 or longer.
